DIY Upcycling Projects: Transforming Old Furniture Into Statement

Adding a new decor item or piece of furniture to your home is a great feeling, but it can  be expensive! Upcycle and transform what you already own into something you will  want to use and display with these upcycling tips and tricks.

Repurpose a Dresser Into a Sink Vanity

Some dressers are just too pretty to donate or leave in storage, but they don’t always  match your home’s aesthetic. A fantastic way to keep them in use is to transform them  into a bathroom vanity, as long as the dresser is deep enough to allow enough space  for the sink and faucet. Then it’s just a matter of choosing a countertop and cutting  holes for the water pipes.

Cabinet = Bar Cart

Sideboards and cabinets can find new life by getting repurposed into a bar cart. Add in  racks for glasses, a mat for mixing drinks, and if you’re feeling particularly ambitious,  you could add in an ice machine. And if the cabinet is on the larger side, a mini fridge  could also be added.

Cribs Into Dog Crates

Once your little one grows out of their crib, it can be recycled into a piece for the other  baby in the family - the fur baby. There are lots of online tutorials to show you how to  convert a crib to a crate, and if you have a dog on the bigger side it’s a great way to  reuse something you already had into a piece you’ll want to keep on display.

Transform a Hutch Into a Bar

A coffee bar, a drink bar, whatever you fancy. A hutch is a great upcycle project to not  only store all your bar needs, but also show off your glasses or mugs, coffee maker,  alcohol collection, or whatever else you want to display.

Entertainment Center to Play Kitchen

Another one for the kids, an entertainment center can be transformed into a play  kitchen. It’s a fully customizable project that depends on the time and effort you’re  willing to invest, but DIY-ing a basic kitchen is a no-brainer. It’s a great project that your  kids can help with by choosing the paint colors and decorations they can make it feel  like their own.

How to Breathe New Life Into Old Furniture

Sometimes a piece of furniture just needs a little TLC to feel brand new again, or to  make it work in your space. Try these hacks to freshen up an old piece or transform it  into something that you’ll want in the home.

• Update the hardware: Add flashy drawer pulls or update with more modern  latches and handles. Changing furniture hardware is one of the easiest and  quickest ways to update any piece of furniture.

• Add tile or wallpaper: Peel and stick wallpaper and tiles are any home DIY-er’s  best friend as it’s easy to install and easy to remove. Add a bright pop of color to  a hutch or bookshelf, or tile the top of a console table or desk to completely  change the look

• Re-stain or recolor: Vintage and older furniture items are usually elaborate and  decorative wooden pieces that are far too pretty to not use them, but often need  some help. Sanding and staining wooden pieces will make them look new again,  and repainting helps customize to your aesthetic.

• Reupholstering: In the same vein, reupholstering is another fantastic way to  make furniture your own. Choose whatever fabric you want, and you can either  reupholster yourself or take the furniture to have it done by a professional.
